Changing microtome blades can be a source of injury for histologists – it seems like a rite of passage for a histologist to cut themselves while handling a blade. The steps of removing a blade from the blade holder on the microtome, disposing of the used blade in the dispenser, getting a new blade out of the dispenser, positioning the blade in the blade holder, and making sure it is aligned as it is clamped down all carry with them a risk of injury.
On top of the risk of injury, there is a potential for lost specimen tissue if a blade is not properly aligned before sectioning a block.
After hearing about these trials of changing microtome blades, we developed the NEW Aquaro Wishbone, our first product designed to make microtomy safer. The Wishbone allows you to remove and dispose microtome blades, as well as insert and align them, without ever touching the blade. This helps you avoid the risk of an injury. The Wishbone also allows you to apply equal pressure to both ends of the blade for level alignment, reducing the risk of lost tissue due to a misaligned blade.
With the Wishbone, you can use the embedded magnet to remove the used blade and transfer the blade to the disposal portion of the blade dispenser. You can then use the Wishbone to slide a new blade into the microtome blade holder, and apply equal pressure to both ends of the blade while clamping it. See how to use the Wishbone in the video below:
